Fatigue tests Laboratory

For heavy structural testing
Sasolblock

The Fatigue Tests Laboratory, also known as "The Block" is one of a handful of unique structural test facilities worldwide. Heavy structures of up to 10 tons can be accommodated. A 15 m x 18 m vibration-isolated T-slotted floor (block) is utilized to mount test structures to be tested. Several servo hydraulic actuators of different sizes, controlled with servo controllers are normally used to apply static or dynamic loads to the test structures.

Components Lab

For light to medium structural testing

Sasol100X67

Light to medium structural tests are conducted in the Components Lab. Popular among students for its fixed frame servo hydraulic actuators, the lab also houses an electro-dynamic shaker from Spectral Dynamics capable of loads up to 50 kN and 50 mm displacements (peak to peak amplitude). The electro-dynamic shaker is ideal for fatigue testing of components at high-frequency dynamic loads. A Spider 81 controller is utilized to create complex input signals to the shaker.

Optical Measurements Lab

For non-contact measurements

Optics100x67

The Optical Measurements Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art non-contact instrumentation for structural dynamics and statics measurements. These currently include three laser Doppler vibrometers (Polytec PDV100, PSV300 and PSV400) as well as a GOM and Image Systems TEMA Photogrammetry system.  Research is currently underway into Eulerian video analysis, optical flow analysis and sloshing.

Eskom Rotor Lab

Eskom Laboratory for Rotating Equipment

dyn100x67

The Eskom Rotor Lab is an experimental facility which was established to conduct research focusing on the application and development of new measurement and signal processing techniques towards this goal.  A strong emphasis is placed on non-contact measurement techniques as well as condition monitoring of machines operating under fluctuating loads and speeds.

The Lab is equipped with several state-of-the-art experimental test benches that capacitate experimental testing of turbo machinery blades, gearboxes, gas seals and rotor dynamics.

Goldfields Lab

For undergraduate students

Goldfiels100x67

The Goldfields laboratory is mainly used for undergraduate students doing their final year projects. The lab has five double-volume test tables, each fully equipped with a desktop PC and National Instruments Elvis module with signal generator, scope, multi meter, and variable power supply. The lab is also used for undergraduate practical training.

Postgraduate student office

The facility offers 8 fully furnished open plan air-conditioned offices each with PC and internet access.

Botanical Garden

Refresh your mind!

Garden100x67

We are proud of having a Botanical garden on the lab's doorstep! Personnel and students alike love enjoying a break (normally with a cup of steaming coffee in hand) on the benches in front of the lab's entrance The garden offers an impressive variety of trees (all marked with informative name-plates) , plants and more than 40 documented Birds species of which many are resident in the garden.
